3grand is too much to invest in a PC :)

Unless you want to invest about 600 in some monitors.

What size monitor do you have now? I will assume 22"

If you're looking for a purely gaming machine with some light officework then this is a good setup:

CPU: Intel Core i5 750 $234
Mobo: ASUS P7P55D Deluxe $280 or ASUS Maximus III Formula (mmm sexy)
RAM: G.Skill-Ripjaws 4GB DDR3-1333 $125
HDD1: Intel X25-M G2 80GB 2.5" SSD $440
HDD2: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB $105 (or you can recycle your old HDDs)
GPU: 1GB ATI Radeon HD5850 $400+ (shortage of these cards at the moment, would recommend delaying this purchase until prices come back down [expected Q1 2010])
Case: Lian Li Lancool PC-K60 $125
PSU: Corsair VX-550 $106
ODD: Sony-NEC Optiarc AD-7240S $43
CPU HSF: Noctua NH-U12P SE2 $95

~$1,955 (Does not include peripherals or a sound card)

from here http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_gaming_configs

There is really no improvement at all if you go with the LGA1366 Core i7 and will only use the PC for games, trust me :)

add in 2 or 3 additional monitors for eyefinity if you are keen, seen here;
http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity.aspx

keep in mind, ONE monitor has to have a native DisplayPort input.

Or just get 1 24" or 27" screen :)

Should be about $2500 - $3000 total

If you need any help, you can PM me on CG, or reply to this post :)

Just buy Dells for your Mrs and dad, if they need a simple machine to do web browsing/email/youtube, have a look @ ASUS EeeBox 1501, will handle most office tasks.

Stores:

Not sure how far you are away from Balcutta? If pretty close, have a look @ MSY (http://www.msy.com.au/LOCATION/balcatta.htm)

I usually buy from 1 or 2 online stores, then get the parts shipped to my house, but that involves me building the PC, not sure how confident you are with that Scott.

See if you can get someone to build it for you near your neighbourhood, I'm sure someone like me would build it for $100, and stress test it for a few hours, overclock it too if you give me another $20 :D

Sorry Scott, I missed this post.

Um, best practice is to purchase from online shops (if you're getting it from eBay anyway). If anything happens with your hardware, you can directly RMA it through the shop you bought it from :)

NZ is such a rip lol, i7 920 is around 380 in AUS. http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=i7+920&spos=3

The thing is, he doesn't need an i7 (Smiley and Krisis6), he's gonna be playing games and office work mainly (I think), the 1366 i7 is such a rort, the only thing it's better at is the included 32lanes of PCI-E and triple channel RAM -- None which make a BIG difference (maybe like 5% better) compared to the P55 platform ;)

Krim: with the Intel SSD, get 1 of them for your Operating system and like 1/2 main games, install your other games on the velociraptors and the 2*250GB hard drives you got from Alienware can be used to house data :)

You will need an extreme case for that though, (and since I am recommending the 5850 (about 28CMs long <I think>). Not really sure with cases, but the Coolermaster 690, Antec 1200 or the Corsair Obsidian 800 will do nicely!

Krisis: I don't think Krim knows how to overclock, or even install the Megas, it doesn't even have fans lol <--- but it is the best AIR cooler out, unless something came out within the last few weeks, Thermalright is bringing out their VenomousX or S or something very soon, that looks to be good. Maybe even a Corsair H50 for Krmnl.

Nvdia 300 series are not gonna come out in shops till about Late Feb / Early March I think, so he's not gonna have a working PC till then :P

Krim, gimme a buzz if you want a hand with the build etc. i have built about 20 or so gaming machines. Most recent being my Core i7.
Best places to buy here are MSY in Balcatta, MCG Tech in Westminster, NetPlus, and Austin both in Osborne Park. Don't get off Ebay, including postage, you will usually pay more than shopping around for best price between those shops, plus it is a major hassle trying to get warranty shit sorted.
