Actually, she was bascially given the position by default, which in reality is utterly pathetic if you voted for Labour on the fact that Rudd seemed like a good PM.
I didn't vote for labour, but if i was going to, and they said, yeah, maybe this chick here might get the job later, my vote would have been off.
